Pablo Márquez

It was in 1987, at the age of twenty, that Pablo Márquez made his international debut, winning first prize in two international contests, after unanimous votes: the "Villa-Lobos" Competition in Rio de Janeiro, on the occasion of the centenary celebrations of the birth of the Brazilian composer, and the Concours International de Radio France in Paris. Since then, he has also been awarded top prizes in both the Geneva and Munich international contests.

Pablo Márquez has given many concerts in Europe, the Americas and Japan. As a soloist, he has performed, among others, with the Bayerische Rundfunk Orchestra, the Nordwest Deutsche Philh. the Orquesta Jóvem de Rio de Janeiro, and the symphonic orchestras of Salta and Mar del Plata in Argentina.

Pablo's intense activity in the field of contemporary music has led him to premiere many pieces dedicated to him and to work with composers such as György Kurtág and Luciano Berio. In 1995 Pierre Boulez and the Ensemble InterContemporain invited him to play Luciano Berio's Sequenza XI on the occasion of the composer's 70th birthday at the Centre Pompidou in Paris as well as in the Festival Musica in Strasbourg. He also premiered this work in Argentina, in the big hall of the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.

Born in 1967 in Argentina, Pablo Márquez studied at the Escuela Superior de Música of Salta, as well as at the National Conservatory of Buenos Aires with Jorge Martínez Zárate. Masterclasses with Eduardo Fernández and Rosalyn Tureck. In Europe, he studied interpretation with hungarian pianist György Sebök. He is currently Professor at Conservatoire National de Strasbourg and is frequently invited to give masterclasses in Europe and the Americas. In 1999, Pablo received in Buenos Aires the Premio"Konex", given to the musical revelations of the last decade in Argentina.

Future proyects include an artist residence in the Fondation Royaumont, near Paris, with bandoneonist Dino Saluzzi and composer and pianist Gerardo Gandini, as well as work premieres by Chañaral Ortega Miranda (Ircam, Paris), Yan Maresz (with the Ensemble Inter Contemporain at the Centre Pompidou, Paris) and Ahmed Essyad (for the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the guitar class at the Strasbourg Conservatory).

Pablo Márquez has recorded for GHA (as a member of the Trio de Cologne) and Harmonia Mundi.

Gramophone (London): "It would be hard not to be fascinated by such a virtuosity, vivacity and expressivity, especially no table in the guitar solos of Pablo Márquez, a splendid guitarist with a wide range of tonal nuance"
Jutarnji List (Zagreb): "Guitaristic splendour left audience breathless. In Zagreb, we can clamly proclaim Pablo Márquez the musical discovery of the season"
